Everything You Need to Know About Sarasota

If you’re planning a getaway to Siesta Key, you’ll have to take some time to stop by our next-door neighbor Sarasota. Sarasota is a vibrant town full of history, cuisine, and attractions for all ages and interests. During your vacation, take some time away from your Siesta Key rental to discover all these fun things to do in Sarasota!

Brief History of Sarasota

Sarasota’s history goes back more than 10,000 years when the first records indicate hunters and gatherers in the area. Native Americans called this area home until around 1519 when Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto came to South Tampa. It’s believed that de Soto called the area Zarasota, roughly translating to Radiance of Soto.

Soon, more settlers found themselves attracted to Sarasota thanks to the fishing and trading opportunities. Florida was acquired as a US territory in 1819. Throughout 1868 to 1883, Sarasota had a large-scale discovery trend with pioneers such as William H. Whittaker and John Webb.

The city saw a population explosion in the 1870s and continued to grow throughout the 1900s. Today, Sarasota is still one of the most popular destinations in the Sunshine State and holds true to its heritage.
